Hiway Credit Union has officially moved to a Minnesota State charter, dropping the “Federal” from its name and launching all new branding. Founded in 1931 to serve the employees of the Minnesota Highway Department, the credit union has been operating for 90 years. The move to Hiway Credit Union comes after a vote by the credit union membership and approval by the credit union’s board of directors this past fall.
“This is an exciting time for Hiway. The state charter allows us more flexibility in our field of membership which supports our long-term growth plans,” said Hiway President/CEO David Boden. “As a state-chartered credit union, adding new counties to our field of membership means we can add additional branches to better serve our members. And we’re not stopping there — the new Hiway will also offer new and convenient technologies and overall improved channels to serve our members.”
Hiway has already begun construction for a new state-of-art branch in Roseville, set to open in Q2 2021, and has acquired a high-visibility property in Woodbury with intent to build a branch there as well.
New Brand, New Logo
With the migration to a state charter, Hiway took the opportunity to refresh the credit union’s look and brand. Now known as Hiway Credit Union, the credit union’s new logo has a modern and friendly depiction. The icon next to the Hiway name pays homage to the Credit Union’s history as the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) credit union, and, depending on just how you look at it, can be seen as either lane stripes on a highway or an “H.” No matter which you see first when you look, the icon underscores Hiway’s mission to positively impact the member, on their “road of life.”
In addition to the logo change, Hiway has brightened up their color palette, refreshed its messaging, introduced a new brand ambassador in longtime Hiway member, Olympian and Minnesota native Carrie Tollefson, and is updating existing branches to better reflect the communities they serve.
“With the charter change, the Board of Directors and leadership saw an opportunity to freshen up our look and our brand as we look toward a positive future,” Boden added. “This pandemic will, eventually, come to an end and as we wrap up 2020, we see a brighter 2021 for everyone. Hiway will be there to continue to serve our members and the community just as we have since 1931.”
Expanded Field of Membership
The charter change means anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in the seven county metro area (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington) is eligible to join Hiway — in addition Hiway’s longtime select employee groups (SEGs) including the Minnesota Department of Transportation are still included in Hiway’s field of membership.
