Hiway meets with Congressman John Kline in Washington, D.C.

(Washington, D.C.) April 7, 2008 – Representatives from Hiway Federal Credit Union traveled to Washington, D.C., March 3-6 to meet with elected officials and take part in the Credit Union National Association's 2008 Governmental Affairs Conference. Jeff and Jackie Schwalen and Dave Boden were part of an 83-member credit union contingent from Minnesota, joining more than 4,500 attendees from across the country at this annual conference.

Minnesota credit union professionals and volunteers spent the first few days sharpening their knowledge and political advocacy skills, and the trip concluded with legislative meetings to discuss credit union issues.

Jeff Schwalen met with Congressman John Kline on March 5. "Congressman Kline specifically encouraged us to meet with him and arranged his schedule to accommodate us." said Jeff Schwalen, President of Hiway Federal Credit Union. "He was very interested in our position on helping the sub-prime mortgage crisis and asked to be involved in the Homes for our Troops house to be built for Sgt. Marcus Kuboy. He indicated he would support our position and vote for CURIA (Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act), yet declined to cosponsor the bill at this time. We appreciate the opportunity to build a solid working relationship with our elected officials and look forward to their support on credit union issues in the future."

Jeff and Jackie Schwalen and Dave Boden also attended the luncheon on Capitol Hill March 5, where they heard Senators Klobuchar and Coleman support credit unions and their tax exemption. Both Senators acknowledged the positive impact credit unions make in their members' lives and on Minnesota's economy.
